Lessons

I used to think that as a mother I would teach all the lessons to my children. The ABC's, potty training, no hitting your brother, eat your vegetables, etc. These are important, but in the grand scheme of life, not really.

This past month with Dillon being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, I have realized that my children teach me more life lessons than I would ever teach them. For instance, Dillon has accepted all the things he needs to do without complaining or being bitter, which includes 4 or more blood draws a day, AND 4 or more needle injections every day...never less than this, sometimes more.

I as an adult have complained about much more meaningless things everyday.

I don't believe he has ever been angry or depressed at all. I on the other hand have been comforted by him, "don't cry mom, it's ok". There are just many lessons we learn from our children about how to be happy despite the obstacles we face. I don't think I ever have a right to complain about anything ever again because of my son's example.

Our New Normal

I think there is a time for everything, and I feel like I am in mourning. Our little son Dillon was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 3 days ago. I think I have cried more in 3 days than in the whole 32 years I have been alive. I have been an emotional wreck, especially the first time I had to give him his insulin shot and he hid behind his hospital bed and screamed and yelled, "I hate shots, I hate shots", we had to hold him down and afterward he was mad at me and said I hurt him. I broke down thinking, how can I "hurt" my child, but I have to or he will not live.

All in all, Dillon is doing amazing, it is awe inspiring to watch him accept and trust the doctors and nurses and his parents. I am not saying he loves getting shots, but he is learning to accept this little by little. I thank God for the miracles of modern medicine. So many discoveries have been made even in the last 6 years to help diabetics. The needle size even is so teeny, Stephen and I had to give each other shots of saline so we could practice and I was amazed how you could barely feel it. Also the fact that we discovered he had this on his well child visit before he got really sick was a blessing in itself.

I am sad over losing our old way of life, of realizing that we need to give him 5 or more insulin shots a day, over him hiding every time we mention it's time to eat and we need to make sure he can eat and therefore he needs a shot, I am sad because when he goes out and plays in the snow, I worry constantly that his blood sugar might be too low, I am sad because we have to poke his finger at least 5 times a day to make sure he is in the "range". I think of his blood sugar "range" being within the normal numbers constantly. I am thinking of him living with this disease for the rest of his life, and it is not only his disease, but now our whole family's disease.

I don't know if a Target pharmacist has ever seen anyone openly cry at a bill before, well now she has--$700 every month! I had to run into the bathroom, and cry, good thing Stephen was there to pay for it, I wanted to yell and scream, this is not fair, why him, why us? Now there are 2 huge boxes of syringes on our counter and insulin in our refrigerator, and I cried over that today.

I am glad that Dillon can eat normally like everyone else, we just need to know what he is eating, snacks are a little different, but yes, he can eat sugar and he is not on a rigid diet, like they needed to be in the past, which yes, is a blessing.

It is amazing how life can change so quickly, but I am also glad that I have the knowledge of eternal families and that no matter what happens to us and our physical bodies on this earth, we are first and foremost spiritual beings, children of a Heavenly Father who loves us. I think through time the acceptance will come, the questions will be replaced by peace and we will understand.

I hope that the lessons we are learning will be ones that make us more compassionate toward others, to help others who might be struggling in life, and all in all I know that through this experience, we will be a better and stronger family.

I know a lot of people are praying for us, thank you, we appreciate that!

Catching up

I was pretty good (ok, somewhat good) at catching up with 2 kids, but 3 kids has left me in a tale spin most days. So since September:

Dillon turned 4.

Halloween included the children dressing up as a policeman, Ironman, and a bumblebee.

Rose turned 1 in December during a blizzard.

Stephen had an emergency appendectomy a week before Christmas.

We drove to Ohio for Christmas.

We spent time at an indoor waterpark on the way back from Christmas.

Sam turned 6 (yes all my kids have birthdays in Nov, Dec, and Jan -why did I do that to myself?)

And Rose is now walking at 14 months, it's a crazy life, but it's mine!

And now we are dealing with the long drawn out Minnesota winter, where we think it will never end, and then it will!

Here's some pics, although bad quality from my phone, but nonetheless:

My little darlings and their costumes

Talk about a long night! Whew!

Christmas at my folks in Ohio

Cool restaurant where they deliver your food to you on a train!

Sam's 6th bday party where I will never again host 8, 6 year old boys again in the confines of our home, something definitely different next time! lesson learned.

There's something about...

To me, there's just something about.....
A baby in overalls, finding little fuzzies on the carpet (and anything else)
Little Kindergartner kissing their mommy good-bye as he leaves on the bus
Dirty little 3 year-old digging up mom's flowers
The list could go on, but there's just something about these little children.

Tender moments

Being a mother is one of the hardest, yet best things I have ever done. I am not complaining because I want to be a mom, there's nothing more in life that I could ask for than to have the children that I have. I always try and keep my sense of humor and remember the tender moments and those that make me laugh. So take today for instance. I went into the store with all 3 kids and everything went well until I realized it was pouring, absolutely raining cats and dogs outside when I was ready to take the groceries to the van...so running to the van with 3 kids in the pouring rain; hating it, until I realized that all three of my kids were loving the warm summer rain soaking them to the bone, even the baby was rubbing her little wet feet together. So, that was my little tender moment when I realized things weren't as bad as they seemed.

Rose hasn't been sleeping well, probably due to teething, so I just get up and nurse her back to sleep, and I have been totally drained and a walking zombie the past week, but every time I look at my sweet little 6 month old, she smiles at me and gives me a hug in her own special way, and when I nurse her she touches my face with her soft little hands. I know I will miss those special little tender moments.

When I put the boys to bed, they have these delay tactics so they get to stay up longer, so I'll be closing the door to their bedroom and Sam will say,
"mom can we have pancakes in the morning?"
"yes, Sam"
"goodnight"

"Mom?"
"what Sam?"
"I love you mom"
"Love you too Sam"

"mom?"
"can I give you a hug and kiss?"
...so it will go on and on like this, but those are the moments that I will remember and cherish.

I am just grateful that I get to have these little people who will grow up to be big people in my life forever.

Archi-update

I am terrible, it's been almost 2 months since I last updated this blog, oops! Good thing I take pictures so I remember things...
Here's Rose, she's now 3.75 months, she enjoys drooling, smiling, eating, sleeping and dirtying diapers. I have been trying to get a picture of her smiling, but every time I would bring the camera up to my face, she would go serious on me, but I tricked her and brought the camera up too fast, so not the best picture, but at least she's smiling! We all spend about half our day trying to get her to smile, there's really nothing better in life than a baby's first smiles.

And watching sleeping Rose occupies the other half of our day, isn't she so so cute when she sleeps (I'm not biased or anything!)

Dressing her up in cute clothes is also another chunk of our day.

She loves sucking on her 2 fingers, and even in the morning when she wakes up I can hear her sucking like mad on those 2 fingers. We also have been trying to get her to giggle, and we figured that when we make a sudden movement and then freeze, she will let out a little giggle, so guess what else we spend our time doing, you guessed it, doing crazy jiggly movements and then freezing, just for a little giggle. She's already got us wrapped around her little finger.
Recently, we went to the MN Children's Museum for their dinosaur exhibit that they have, it was pretty fun to watch the boys pretending to be dinosaurs guarding their cave and scaring other children away with their growling. Here's the boys with a Cephalo-something-asaurus, which I had never seen one like this before. Dillon thought it might eat him by the expression on his face.

It was packed that day, but we still had fun, here's us in the dinosaur room again.

This is the water world part of the museum, the boys loved playing bubbles and watching ping pong balls go through tubes and such. I didn't get a picture of the room that I thought they enjoyed the most, it was called World Market, where they have a town set up kid size and they can go in the grocery store/post office/restaurant/bus, etc. Sam was fun to watch as he pretended to be a grocery store clerk, it made me realize just how smart that little boy is. I already get a little weepy thinking of him venturing off to Kindergarten this Fall.

I made the boys these hoody towels, nothing spectacular, but they love them. They definitely love each other too.
Here's the kiddos again and Rose sucking on her 2 fingers. Dillon is so tired in this picture, but he was a trooper, I did have to bribe him with a piece of candy if he sat still like a good boy.

Surviving the Winter

Well, we are definitely in the thick of winter here in Minnesota; I am really not afraid of driving in snow/ice/slush anymore! Just ready for some sun and warmth...the highlights of this month include a visit from my parents, Rose's blessing at church, and Sam turning 5 and having a "Pirate Bday Party" with 9 kids...that's about it...now, bring on February!
